and gates. c1827. For Joseph Hughes. Ashlar over brick with
concealed roof and brick and stucco stacks; iron area and
forecourt railings and gates.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement at left, 3+3+1 first-floor
windows (includes window to right to curved end). Ashlar
detailing includes first- and second-floor bands. 6/6 sashes
where original, 4th and 6th openings are blind to first and
second floors, 1st and 2nd openings are blind to ground floor;
all in plain reveals and with sills. First-floor window to
right end a 6/6 sash, curved on section; ground floor has C20
casement. Central entrance to No.1: 6-raised-and-fielded-panel
door with fanlight with batwing and circle type glazing bars.
Crowning frieze and low coped parapet. Right return has 3
storeys, first-floor windows then single-storey, single-window
range to right. 6/6 sashes where original; to first floor the
3rd opening is blind and to second floor the 1st and 2nd
openings are blind. Entrance to right of main range a
6-fielded-panel door with fanlight with batwing and circle
type glazing bars. Extension at right has horizontal
rustication.
INTERIOR: retains original joinery and plasterwork; mid-C19
bar.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: arrowhead area and forecourt railings and
to sides of steps, dogbars to left part; similar gates;
stanchions have urn finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Square was laid out from 1827
onwards for Joseph Hughes, with the Sudeley Arms for himself.
Occupies a good corner site.
