SO58SE Barns to south-east of Bockleton

GV II

Range of 2 barns. C17 and C18. Weatherboarded timber-frame on
rubble stone plinth. Coursed stone rubble. Plain-tile roofs.
L-shaped plan consisting of framed barn forming one wing
aligned north-south and later stone barn forming the other.
C17 framed barn: 3 bays with extension bay with rubble stone
gable. Opposing C19 barn doors in central bay of original
range. Single trenched-purlin roof with straight wind braces,
original rafters on one pitch only, 4 trusses. North gable-end
truss of cambered tie beam, 4 vertical struts, collar and twin
raking struts over. Central trusses have cambered tie beams,
twin-strut trusses with collars. South truss with cambered tie
beam, vertical strut and collar. Wall frames of
square-panelled framing with posts, middle rails and tension
braces. Extension bay to south with gable-end truss underbuilt
with stone, single purlin roof, restored wall framing with
tension braces.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
C18 stone barn: 5-bay range with link bay to east abutting
framed range. South wall with dormer to left, central doorway
with brick segmental arch, various small doors and loft
openings. West gable has central door flanked by ventilation
slits, and pitching hole at loft level, all with brick
segmental arches. North wall with 3 boarded door openings and
2 brick and stone buttresses. Triple trenched-purlin roof with
4 twin raking-strut trusses with high collar and cambered tie
beam. Large bridging beams carry loft floor.
