House in row, now subdivided. Early C19, but on site of
property rebuilt in 1640 and incorporating parts of that
building. Rendered with false ashlar jointing, colourwashed,
rear mainly limewashed rubble, clay pantiles between coped
gabled, brick end and central chimney stacks.
PLAN: originally a 3-room cross-passage plan, all rooms
heated, inserted central stack; added outshut to swept-down
roof to No.11A, staircase rear left; No.11B has
through-passage shared with No.11A, which originally formed
one house with No.11B and was probably a hall and outer room
of a 3-unit plan house whose inner end has now been lost to
the garden of No.9. No.11C probably a C18 farm building,
converted into dwelling since.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 4 bays irregular fenestration. Sash
windows of 16 panes, these to lower bays 2 and 4 being larger,
with now windows lower bay 1, the window to bay 4 being
non-aligned. Entrance in bay 3 has pair 3-flush panel doors.
Plain west gable. Additional building attached to rear. Rear
passage door wide plank.
INTERIOR: partly inspected; ground floor to No.11A has wide
stone fireplace with rough basket arch lintel and wide
chamfer, and there are rough transverse C17 beams with
chamfer. The stone-paved cross passage has a C17 door and a
'hatch'. The early staircase is a tight wooden spiral. C20
roof. No.11B (VAG) has chamfered and stop-chamfered beams and
late C18 roof truss. No.11C (VAG) has C18 trusses with tenoned
in-line purlins and lapped collars.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the property has deeds dating back to 1321;
It was granted to St. John's Hospital, Bath, and not sold into
private occupation until 1885 (Scrase).
