House. Late C16, with later alterations. Local stone rubble,
Doulting stone dressings to doorway, clay pantiled roof
between coped gables, brick end chimney stacks.
PLAN: 2-unit central entry plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic. 2 wide bays. Below, two almost
square bay windows, of 4+24+4 pane units, under continuous
lean-to roof covered with Welsh slates, between these a
4-centred chamfered arch with boarded door on strap hinges,
possibly of C16 date. First floor has two 3-light casement
windows each having 15 panes to each light.
INTERIOR: ground floor left has wide stone fireplace with
chamfered surround and deep lintel carrying a carved
inscription, in italic, a Rupert Brooke quotation, C18 dado
panelling, central boxed beam; the room to right,
incorporating the former cross-passage, has a shell cupboard,
C17 door, and 2-panel C18 door to corner stair which is a
timber winder, with, at the quarter turn, a cupboard with
fielded panels, in a former window recess.
The first floor has chamfered beams, and the room to the right
has a reputed 'priests' hole' to the right of the former
fireplace, possibly the site of a former staircase. A tight
wooden spiral stair rises to the attic, which has one very
thin C17 moulded plank door on strap hinges.
The roof has heavy worn principals and one purlin; at the W
end are 4 bays, with chamfered purlins below a later roof
structure.
Like many of the properties in this street, the house is a
palimpsest of various builds.
