Terraced houses. c1825. Probably by Amon Wilds and Charles
Augustine Busby. Brick, now painted on some houses, with
dressing of stucco, roofs of slate so far as visible.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over half-basement, Nos 6 and 9 with
dormers, 3-window range. Round-arched entrances for the most
part, with fanlights. All houses have full-height segmental
bays, those on Nos 1A and 7-12 being almost full-width, the
rest of 2-window range. All windows flat-arched except those
to first-to-third floors of Nos 7, 9 and 11, which have
cambered arches.
Features of individual houses are: No.1A: flat-arched entrance
to centre of bay; all lintels with stucco voussoirs and
vermiculated keystones; first-floor balcony with elaborate
iron railings; cornice over first floor; individual cornices
over second-floor windows; cornice and blocking course; stack
to party wall; return in Gloucester Street with flat-arched
entrance set back under a round arch with pilasters and
entablature; 3 windows, those to the right of the entrance
with cornice on consoles to ground and first floors; 2-storey
bay over entrance.
House next to No.1A: ground-floor stuccoed with panel between
ground-floor windows; flat-arched entrance with overlight;
sill band to second-floor windows which also have stucco
lintels decorated with discs and reeding, as do those on the
third floor; cornice with ball and wedge ornament; cast-iron
railings to area.
No 2: round-arched entrance with fanlight with decorative
glazing, panelled door of original design; ground floor
stuccoed with panel between windows; sill band to second-floor
windows; sashes of original design to first-to-third floors;
moulded cornice and blocking course; cast-iron railings to
steps and area.
No 3: round-arched entrance with fanlight, decorative glazing
and panelled door of original design; ground-floor brickwork
painted; sill band to second-floor windows; gauged brickwork
of third-floor windows crudely replaced; parapet; cast-iron
railings to steps and area.
No.4: round-arched entrance with fanlight and panelled door of
original design; brickwork entirely painted; sill band to
second-floor windows; sashes of original design to
first-to-third floors; cornice and blocking course; cast-iron
railings to steps and area.
No.5: round-arched entrance with fanlight; all brickwork
painted; sill band to second-floor windows; cornice and
parapet.
No.6: round-arched entrance with fanlight and panelled door of
original design; all brickwork painted; sill band to second
floor, moulded cornice to bay continued across front; parapet;
flat-arched dormer in mansard roof.
No.7: ground floor stuccoed; round-arched entrance with
fanlight, decorative glazing and panelled door of original
design; sill band to second floor; sashes of original design
to first-to-third floors; parapet.
No.8: round-arched entrance with fanlight and panelled door of
original design; all brickwork now painted; sill band to
second-floor windows; parapet; cast-iron railings to steps and
area.
No.9: round-arched entrance with fanlight, decorative glazing
and panelled door of original design, now partly glazed;
ground floor stuccoed; sill band to second-floor windows;
moulded cornice and blocking course; dormer in mansard roof.
No.10: ground floor C20 shop front in C19 extension; upper bay
flanked by fluted pilasters; sill band to second-floor windows
with oak-leaf ornament; sashes of original design to
first-to-third floors; cornice and blocking course.
No 11: ground floor has C20 shop front in C19 extension;
brickwork of upper floors all painted; sill band to
second-floor windows; parapet.
No.12: round-arched entrance with fanlight and panelled door
of original design; all brickwork stuccoed and mouldings
simplified; sill band to first and second-floor windows;
sashes of original design to first-to-third floors; parapet.
No.13: flat-arched entrance with overlight; all brickwork
painted; ground-, second- and third-floor windows have stucco
voussoirs and keystones; sill band to second-floor windows
with chain ornament; sashes of original design to
first-to-third floors; cornice of ball and wedge ornament;
blocking course.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Cast-iron railings to steps and area.
