Gatepiers with associated gates
5.12.89 and railings at entrances to
Rookery Hill and drive to
Church of St Giles
GV II
Two sets of gatepiers and gates, with linking railings. Probably c.1790, associated
with rebuilding of Ashtead Park House (q.v.). Limestone ashlar and wrought-iron.
The principal gateway at the entrance to Rookery Hill has a set of 4 large piers,
each approx. one metre square in section and 3 metres high, with 3 raised
punched bands, a moulded cornice and square top, and the inner pair with ball
finials on swept pedestals; the main gateway has a wide single gate hung on the
south pier, with knobbed standards at each end and pointed railings secured by a
low rail (dog-bars below) and a hoop, and a concave top rail with a band of
scrolls under it; the pedestrian gates at each side are similar in style but with
straight tops. From the outer pier on the south side plain railings approx.2 metres
high form a quadrantal link with the other gateway, which has 3 similar piers
(but without ball-finials), railings in place of a pedestrian gate on the south
side, and no main gate. (A loose gate leaning against the linking railings matches
the other main gate but appears to be too small for this gateway.)
