south of Church of St Giles
GV II
Row of 7 monumental headstones on north-south line (interrupted between the
1st and 2nd). Mostly mid C18. All of limestone. Commemorating (from left to
right):
(1) Mary Bovey (d.1746 [?]): shaped top, carved skull-and-cross-bones;
(2) John Syms (d.1787): shaped top with fan, two 4-line verses of doggerel;
(3) Alice Syms (d.1785): similar to (2), including verses; footstone to rear
inscribed "AS 1785";
(4) John Symes (d.1738): crude segmental pediment with consoles, carved skull;
matching footstone to rear inscribed "JS 1738"
(5) Benjamin Symes (d.1742, aged 27): similar to (4) but with more emphatic
design, and couplet "Young men of strength behold and see
Just in my prime Death conquered me";
matching footstone to rear insribed "BS 1742";
(6) Phebe Symes (d.1755): large stone, elaborately shaped top with scrolls, skull-
and-cross-bones;
(7) Mrs Mary Hunt (d.1747): similar to (6); footstone to rear inscribed
"MH 1747".
