SD 62NW SAMLESBURY SPRING LANE

6/105 Barn c. 50 metres east of
- Upland Farmhouse

Barn, date unknown but probably C17 or earlier. Cruck frame, stone
cladding, slate roof. Four bay plan with front outshut to 4th bay.
Stone quoins; window and door at left end (under loft in 1st bay),
opposed wagon doors to 3rd bay, 2 small windows in front wall of
outshut (under loft in 4th bay). Lean-to extension of brick at left
end, a blocked former window (or door) with wooden lintel above it.
Interior: 3 full cruck trusses, the blades (which measure near the
base c. 15" x 10"), touching at the apex and trenched for the ridge,
a collar just beneath the apex; spurs but no tie beams; principal
rafters notched on the backs of the blades; on one side overlapped
purlins rest on the backs of the principals, on the other they are
further raised on short deep baulks.
