The Forge

Cottage, C17 with possible medieval core. One storey and attics. 2-cell plan.
Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof with axial chimney, the shaft rebuilt
in C20 red brick. A gabled thatched dormer, possibly of C17 origin, with C19 casement
C19 and C20 small-pane casements. Thatched lean-to porch with C20 framed
and boarded entrance door. The house has a complete C17 timber-framed chimney,
a rare and important survival in Suffolk. Posts at the corners rise from the floor
level, and in the right hand room is an open fireplace whose lintel is tenoned into
the posts. Widely-spaced studs are tenoned into the lintel, rising to cross-framing
at eaves level. The hood continues into the roof with a shaft of brick at the head.
This type of chimney, common in C16 and C17 Suffolk, normally only survives
fragmentally at most. Some posts and tie-beams and other members are of medieval
origin, and some smoke-blackened rafters may be in situ. First floor inserted in
C18 or perhaps C19, together with reconstruction of roof structure.
