Large house. C17 with wing dated 1722 on a lead rainwater head on
the garden front and C20 extensions. C17 range; limestone rubble
with dressed stone quoins. C18 range; ashlar. C20 extension
random squared and dressed limestone. Stone slate roofing to the
C17 and C20 ranges. Artificial stone slate and ashlar stacks to
the C18 range. 'L'-shaped plan to the C18 range with C20 entrance
extension at the rear and the remains of the C17 range (partially
burnt down early C18) at the left gable end (viewed from the
garden front). C20 extension to the right gable end. Flat-roofed
C20 extension to the rear of the C17 range, not of special
interest. C17 range; 1½ storeys. Garden front; one 3-light
double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement, gablet with a 2-light
stone-mullioned casement with early leaded panes and a stopped hood
upper right. Flat-chamfered Tudor-arched doorway with imposts and
keystone (now blocked) with a C20 two-light stone-mullioned
casement inserted in the blocking. C18 range; 2 storeys and
attic. Flat-chamfered plinth with rusticated quoins. Five-
windowed facade lit by 12-pane sashes with narrow glazing bars and
moulded architraves and moulded sills. Band beween floors, deep
moulded eaves cornice. Central fielded 6-panel door with the upper
two panels glazed, within a moulded architrave with a coved hood
supported on moulded stone brackets. Cotswold style extension to
the right mirroring the C17 range but with a 3-light stone-
mullioned casement in the place of the blocked doorway. Entrance
front; flat-roofed C20 two-storey with C20 single and 2-light
casements and a balustraded parapet. One 2-light stone-mullioned
casement cut from a single stone block with two small lancet-headed
lights. Early plank door with moulded fillets, a reused 3-centred
arched surround with foliate scrollwork in the spandrels and a deep
moulded hood with engaged pendants either side. Stairs projection
to the right (possibly originally part of the C17 range) with a
very tall stone-mullioned cross window and two 2-light hollow-
chamfered stone-mullioned casements. Gabled extension to the early
range projects forwards to the right and is linked via a wall c2m
high to outbuilding. Plank door in wall with the rails and stiles
of a C17 door with the carved surround to a blind-arched panel at
the top. Outbuilding; 1½ storeys with possible former granary
over part with access via 4 stone steps up to a plank door in the
gable end. Three plank doors in the side facing the house. Six
pigeon holes with landings to the first floor in the same side.
Interior of C18 range: fielded 5-panel doors, fielded dados.
Several carved Baroque style fireplaces and one classical style
fireplace inserted mid C20. Fine C18 dog leg staircase with
barleytwist on vase balusters and fielded panelling. Ogee stops to
beams in the C17 range.
The balustrading on the entrance porch and attached to the house
comes from Bowood House. The Tudor entrance doorway comes from
Banbury.
