4/116 Hogwell's Farmhouse

House. Late C17, altered in C19. Timber framed with C19 facade of painted
brick in English bond, the remainder plastered, roofed with handmade red clay
tiles. 3 bays facing W, with approximately central stack forming a
lobby-entrance. C19 2-storey lean-to extension along full length of rear,
forming a catslide, and C19 external stack to rear. C20 lean-to porch to rear.
2 storeys. 2-window range of C19 casements in segmental arches. 4-panel door
in segmental arch. Chamfered transverse beams and plain joists of large
vertical section jointed to them with soffit tenons and diminished haunches; in
the right bay some joists have been reset. 2 wood-burning hearths. Interior of
roof structure not inspected. The name can be traced back to a rental of 1489,
when it was 'a tenement and 4 acres', but it is shown as Kings in Chapman and
André's map of 1777 (Essex Record Office, D/DK M.138 and D/DB T.260).
