House. C15, altered in C17 and C20. Timber framed with some brick, plastered,
roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall aligned N-S, with early C17
axial stack in S bay. 2-bay extension to S (replacing original service bay),
C17/C18. The parlour/solar bay to the N is incorporated in Victoria Cottage,
item 8/30, q.v. Passage along E side covered and incorporated with house. C20
single-storey extension to E of N end. One storey with attics. S elevation (to
High Street), ground floor, 2 early C19 casements of 18 lights, blocked doorway
with simple pilasters and canopy on profiled brackets, converted to 2 windows.
First floor, one Cl9 sash. C20 half-glazed door with plain fanlight. The
interior of the original build has jowled posts, widely spaced heavy studding,
truncated arched braces rising from the middle posts of the hall, but middle
tiebeam removed for inserted stack. Edge-halved and bridled scarf in W
wallplate. Rebates for shutters of hall windows in both wallplates. Inserted
floor in hall, with chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops, joists
plastered to the soffits, original rebated floorboards of hardwood. Crownpost
roof plastered to the soffits of the collars, axial braces removed. In the S
extension, chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of
square section. Large wood-burning hearth of 0.33 metre brickwork facing N,
reduced for C20 grate, and smaller wood-burning hearth facing S. Formerly The
Victoria public house.
