8/36 No. 8 (Rose Briar Cottage)
GV II
House. C15, extended in C20. Timber framed, roughcast rendered, roofed with
red clay pantiles. Comprises the 2-bay service crosswing of a medieval hall
house which formerly extended to the E, the remainder reported to have been
destroyed by fire in the 1920s, with inserted internal stack against W wall.
C20 extension to N. 2 storeys. S elevation (to West Street), one C20 sash on
each storey, with diamond leading. C20 door. Roof re-aligned with ridge E-W.
Jowled posts, heavy studding, some wattle and daub infill. E-W beam with
mortices and wattle groove for former partition between 2 service rooms, joists
plastered to the soffits, but probably concealing an underbuilt jetty to the
street. Unglazed window with 2 diamond mullions and shutter groove in W wall,
similar window with empty mortices in N wall. Chamfered arched braces to
cambered tiebeam. Crownpost roof with axial bracing, the original rear bay with
gablet hip complete within the re-aligned roof, the formerly gabled front bay
rebuilt. C17/C18 wood-burning hearth. Possibly RCHM 15.
