Silverwell reservoir
- II
Reservoir wall. 1705. Granite. Length of wall c.6.50 m x 2.5 m high, in good
squared and coursed granite to quoins; small chamfered plinth, mainly concealed
below C20 road surface but emerging at right end. Top of wall overgrown
(September 1988) but no coping visible. Wall contains two openings with
cambered lintels chamfered to stops on jambs; each opening with cast iron doors,
banded and padlocked, c.700 mm wide and 850 mm high, set at about 1.25 m from
road level. This is all that now remains from the reservoir created in 1705,
using water from the Silverwell, and serving the three conduits (qqv) which are
in the principal streets. Until the mid-1980s much of the actual reservoir
remained, but the area is now overbuilt. Of special historical interest.
