SP 81 NE WINGRAVE WITH ROWSHAM RECREATION GROUND

GV II

Pair of houses. Dated H de R 1876 on plaque. Red brick with half-timbering
and patterned tile-hanging to first floor. Tiled roof with some fishscale
patterning, 3 brick chimneys with pilasters. 2 storeys, 2 asymmetrical
bays to N. C20 casements in original openings. Right bay is gabled and
projecting and has jettied first floor with coved overhang and oriel
window with coved base. Half-glazed door in left return wall has tiled
lean-to hood on brackets. Left bay has smaller gable. W. side has gabled
bay to left with first floor and oriel window jettied on brackets, and
altered lean-to, formerly a porch with turned wooden balusters to
right. Hipped dormer window above porch. Extended to S. and W. C20.
Similar to Nos. 22 and 24 Leighton Road. Part of a group of picturesque
estate cottages built for Hannah de Rothschild in style influenced by work
of George Devey at Ascott.
