Estate cottage. Late C19, extended C20. Brick with diaper patterning in
dark headers, stone dressings, fish scale gabled roof. Irregular plan
with one large and one smaller gable facing west with decorative carved
bargeboards with dropped finials; large chimney between with fluted
shafts, stone base and elaborate offset head. One storey two 3-light
casement windows in stone surrounds with decorative glazing. Entrance
porch on north side of larger gable, with brick column on stone base,
tumbled brick and stone parapet with flat roof behind. C20 extension
at rear. The cottage was built as part of the Walter Model Estate village
of which Bear Wood (listed in the Parish of Arborfield and Newland) was
the large house built for John Walter.
