Row of 5 estate cottages. Late C19. Brick with diaper patterning in dark headers,
fish scale slate gabled roof. Rectangular plan with 3 large and 2 small gables
facing west in a symmetrical facade. The large gables alternate with the smaller
which break the eaves; all with decorative carved bargeboards. One and a half
storeys, 7 large tall chimneys with clustered and fluted shafts, toothed bases
and elaborate offset heads, some pots original. 2-light casement windows on first
floor, 3-light on ground floor, all with decorative glazing bars. Entrance porches
on west front on internal angles of projecting gables, with brick columns on stone
bases, and tumbled brick and stone parapets with flat roofs behind. These cottages
were built as part of the Walter model estate village of which Bear Wood (listed
in the Parish of Arborfield and Newland) was the large house built for John Walter.
