Schoolhouse

School; schoolhouse now incorporated into school. 1853-54. By William
Butterfield. Dressed sandstone with sandstone ashlar quoins and dressings;
slate roof. L-shaped on plan, with former schoolhouse forming a wing to the
rear of the school. School: single-storey, 2-window front, with lower
outbuilding to right. Pointed and quoined entrance in outbuilding contains
double board doors. Windows to left are each of 3 stepped lights. Steeply-
pitched main roof with half-hipped pent roof to outbuilding. Right gable
wall: wall above lean-to contains a cinquefoil light recessed in chamfered
pointed surround. Dawnay arms in the gable end above. Left gable wall:
tall 2-light window beneath pointed hood-mould. Rear: 2 cross gables each
containing 2-light windows. Ridge stack with steep offsets to right cross
gable. All windows have Geometric tracery, chamfered sills and quoined
surrounds. Former schoolhouse: single-storey, 3-bay range. Board door to
left in quoined surround with pointed chamfered head. 3-light window to
right with tall large-pane sashes, beneath segmental arch. Single sash to
end right. Roof steeply-pitched and half-hipped to right. 2 ridge stacks
