Tower of the former St Helen's Chapel of Ease; now lychgate and bell tower.
C14; restored in 1853-54, when the spire was added by William Butterfield.
Sandstone rubble with restoration, including buttresses, in sandstone
ashlar; stone flag spire and slate roof to staircase extension. 3-stage
tower with offset diagonal buttresses and single-stage staircase extension
to north. Lowest stage pierced on both sides by a double-chamfered pointed
arch on chamfered responds, with bar stops to the west and broach stops to
the east. Single rectangular light to second stage, and 2-light louvred
bell openings with trefoil tracery beneath pointed head-stopped hood-mould
to third stage. Chamfered string courses to second and third stages.
Octagonal broach spire with lucarnes and weather-vane. Pent roof to
