Pair of houses, former poorhouse. C.1600 and C18. Of 2 storeys. Timber framed
with a clay peg tile gabled roof. Cherry Cottage is plastered and Chestnut
Cottage is clad in black and painted boarding. Cherry Cottage has a single
storey lean-to front extension with a peg tile roof, a gable end stack and a
ridgeline stack. The windows are C20 diamond leaded light casements. Chestnut
Cottage has C20 small pane casements and C19 casements with central horizontal
glazing bars. There is one small ridgeline stack surmounting an inglenook
fireplace with moulded mantel beam. The brickwork above this mantel beam has
been rebuilt. The major part of the block was a house or building of c.1600
with a former service crosswing at the west end. This originally had a rear
jetty and has been severely truncated at its front. The 'hall' range has a
curious plan form with suggestions of a central spine wall through 2 storeys.
The eastern bay has deep section stop chamfered floor joists and the entire
structure is substantially built. Block altered to form poorhouse in the late
C18.
