Garden pavilion. c.1750, possibly by Thomas Robins. Thin bedded limestone
rubble with ashlar dressings; some evidence of former red colourwash or
plaster. A two-part pavilion with its front canted to embrace two converging
vistas, all set back against the hillside. Single storey, left has ogee parapet
to stone cross, flanked by pinnacled Gothick panelled buttresses, and with ogee-
headed cusped openings flanking a similar door opening with half round pilasters
approached by 7+2 stone steps. The window openings have stone seat at sill
level on heavy brackets. Right is narrower unit with concave parapet over a
single cusped opening. Left half has coved ceiling, and a cusped-arch door
leads through to the right, which has a small fireplace leading to a cross-roll
saddle flue. One of a group of garden buildings in an important surviving
rococo ensemble.
