Rail bridge over the River Parrett
II*
Telescopic rail bridge. 1871. Cast-iron and steel. Designed to
extend the Bristol and Exeter Railway across the River Parrett
to the coal yard and harbour while allowing sailing vessels to
continue up the river to the town bridge. The central portion
could be rolled back on to the east bank. Motive power was
provided by a steam engine located in a small brick building
at the eastern end, now removed. Part of the railway line
remains on the west bank. A rare example.
