736-1/10/31 (North side)
23/01/74 Nos.3-9 (Odd)
GV II*
Four houses. Early C18. Built for the Duke of Chandos as part
of his Castle Street development along the line of the old
castle wall. Flemish-bond old Bridgwater brick, double-pitch
pantile roofs with brick stacks to right. Double-depth plans,
each with one room to the front. 3 storeys; each house
originally 2-window range, Nos 3, 5 and 7 are now one-window
range with blocked windows above the doors to the left of each
house. Second-floor windows at eaves level originally had
3/6-pane sashes, Nos 3 and 7 still retain them; other windows
have segmental gauged brick arches to 6/6-pane sashes; those
to No 9 in forward frames. Steps up to 6-panel doors under
hoods, some mid C18, with various supports. INTERIORS not
inspected but noted as having C18 doors, fireplaces and other
original features including turned-baluster stairs. A rare
example of a terrace row of artisan houses of this date.
