Painted Royal Arms of 1778 (George III). The supporting lion looks as if the painter had seen a real one, in contrast to many painted locally around this time. The lions fang baring grin has kept the traditional heraldic shape. Also traditional is not changing the Arms with each monarch. These belong to George I, who still laid claim to the kingdom of France (Fleurs de lys in the second quarter of the shield). There are two similar George II Royal Arms in nearby St Nicholas, Bringhurst. (see my photos). (Photo Oct 2007).
