Slate ledger with white marble inlay, south transept. –In this place lieth buried John Mordaunt of medbourne in the County of Leicester Esquire who departed this life Dec 31st 1680 aged c45 years. He was the only son of James Mordaunt Esquire by his wife Frances daughter of sir edward Gostwick of Carrington, County Bedford, Baronet, which James was second son of Henry Lord Mordaunt and brother to John late Earl of Peterborough, the said John Mordaunt married Barbara, daughter of George Ludlow, a younger son of Henry Ludlow of Tadley in the County of Hampshire Esquire, and left issue by her Henry his only surviving child aged about 10 years, a daughter Frances dying young-. Arms - For Mordaunt, Argent, a chevron between three estoiles sable. Impaled with Ludlow, Argent, a chevron between three bears heads erased. The head and shoulders of a North African man denote a Mordaunts service abroad. (Photo Oct 2007).
