Nos.17 AND 18
The Crooked Cottage)

House, divided into two, now one. Mid-C16 and late C17 with
C20 additions. Timber-framed, plastered and weatherboarded
with peg-tiled roof.
One storey and attic with gabled dormer and central stack.
Roof half-hipped at W with minor stack. 2 storeyed cross-wing
at E with front hip and minor stack on E wall. Windows C20
wooden casements with rectangular leaded lights. C20 porch
with boarded door.
INTERIOR: the house comprises a medieval open hall (sooted
roof) and jettied service cross-wing. Both units have crown
posts with thin board-like braces. Cross-wing first floor
retains mullion holes and shutter grooves for windows front
and back and the frame has rising internal braces with a
slight curve at the corners and a central truss. Floor joists
are flat laid, centre tenoned and the jetty is now underbuilt.
A similar jettied block existed at the W end but is now
replaced by a narrow C17 bay. The open hall retains the
central truss with shallow chamfered arched braces bearing
heavy saw marks. Hall frame has exterior arched bracing. All
chamfered members have step stops. High end of hall retains
arched bracing to tie-beam and middle rail and peg holes
suggest site of original bench. In late C17 the hall was
divided horizontally with slender deep section joists and and
a fireplace was placed against service side of central truss
with a dormer window to light the upper storey. Cross passage
elements destroyed but site of front door marked by a
discontinuity in the weatherboarding.
