House and attached forge. House early C16, rebuilt C17; forge
C19. Weatherboard cladding late C18/early C19 but rendered
over C19/C20; roof peg-tiled. Rectangular house plan
comprising a high end cross-wing to the E, originally jettied.
2 storeys. Windows C19, 2 and 3-light casements.
INTERIOR: the partition wall to the hall has display bracing
and peg and joint holes for the original bench and draught
screen. Carpenters assembly marks and the whole sooted where
is once abutted onto the open hall, now all gone. Exterior
rising arched braces and centre tenon joists remain together
with evidence for mullioned windows and shutter grooves. In
the C17 the hall was replaced by 2-storey hall and service
room, oak framed with primary bracing and exposed ceiling
joists. A centre stack and rear stair tower bridging the
hall/solar and cut through the framing of the earlier
cross-wing. Jetty of cross-wing underbuilt. Later in the C17
lean to outshut N of the W service room. C19 continuation of
outshut to meet stair tower and addition of back to back
fireplaces in the service room/outshut.
Forge added to NE angle. Flimsy timber construction. Forge
hearth and hood in brick with iron reinforcement. Renovation
work in progress at time of inspection.
