GV II
House. Early and late C17 and early C19. Timber-framed, with exposed framing
on the front; the remainder rendered. Plaintiled roofs, the front with slated
eaves; slates to the C19 addition. 2 storeys and attics: complex plan; the 2
C17 ranges form an L, with the angle infilled by an early C19 block. The
front range, aligned north-south, is the oldest part of the complex, basically
with a 2-cell lobby entrance form. The internal chimney-stack has a plain
rectangular shaft, corbelled at the head; a later stack is set externally on
the south gable end. Modillion cornice. 2 gabled dormers with 2-light
casement windows. 5 windows: all 2-light C20 replacements. Central 6-
panelled half-glazed door. Plain framing with some reuse of timbers inside:
chamfered main beams, joists on edge. The chimney-stack has been tunnelled
through to make a passage leading to a wide dogleg stair in the c19 block; the
later end stack has a reused carved lintel. Clasped purlin roof. The long
east-west range, in similar materials, but with brick to the ground floor, was
added as a service wing: C20 metal windows; plank door with triangular
pediment; 2 gabled dormers. Joined to the south-east corner of the house, a
short length of high garden wall in curving bands of rubble flint and old red
brick.
