Description

STANTON HARCOURT SUTTON LANE
SP40NW (North side)
Sutton
8/338 Lower Farmhouse
12/09/73 (Formerly listed as Lower
Farm Farmhouse)

GV II

Farmhouse. Datestone 1726 on stack: medieval and C17 origins. Coursed limestone
rubble; gabled stone slate roof; brick ridge and end stacks. L-plan with front
right wing. 2 storeys and attic. Long one-window range to left has cambered
brick arches over two C19 eight-pane sashes left of C20 door. Front wing has
similar window arches, over 8-pane sash and mid C19 horned sash in front wall.
Bread oven to rear. Interior not inspected but likely to be of interest. The
floor was excavated in 1972, when C13 pottery and a medieval hearth were found:
wall thicknesses suggest medieval origins with C17 alterations.
(A. Pacey, Duck End: a group of Oxfordshire Houses (privately published), 1985,
pp.7-9 for plan).
