Semi-detached pair of houses. 1850-2. Brick covered in stucco,
roof of slate. Two storeys over basement. Each house two bays
wide; steps up to the entrance which is in the inner bay, in a
shared three-bay loggia with antae and round arches;
ground-floor windows round-arched with archivolts. Moulded
stucco sill band to first-floor windows which, over the
loggia, consist of pairs set within a recess flanked by
engaged antae; outer windows have simple moulded architraves.
String course, dentil cornice to eaves; party wall expressed
above the roof, pair of corniced stacks at either end; hipped
roof. The rear elevation has a two-storey, three-bay, loggia
in the centre with a balustrade to the first floor;
ground-floor windows have architraves and cornices on
consoles; first-floor windows are round-arched with deep sills
and window-guards.
Nos 38, 40-42 and 44 form a distinct and varied group of
Italianate designs.
