Collegiate school, now university main building. c1836, raised
and extended in the same style 1911. By JG Weightman. Ashlar
with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. Tudor Revival style.
Crosswise central hall flanked by 2 storey wings.
EXTERIOR: plinth, ground floor sillband, crenellated parapets
and coped gables. 2 storeys; 12 window range. Central hall has
projecting crocketed gable to south, with flanking buttresses
and coped octagonal finials. Traceried 4-light Perpendicular
lancet with transom and hoodmould, flanked by single niches
with crocketed finials. Below, 4-light mullioned and transomed
casement, flanked by similar 2-light windows. Returns have
similar 2-light windows above, and 3-light windows below.
Plain coped north gable has gabled single bellcote.
Lower right wing has central projection with crocketed gable
and octagonal finials, with a 4-light cross mullioned window
and below, a canted stone oriel window. To right, a 3-light
cross mullioned window and below, a 3-light window. To left,
similar fenestration, with 2 windows on each floor and a
buttress between the ground floor windows.
To right, a projecting block with projecting central gable and
finials. Traceried Perpendicular triple lancet with side
lights, flanked by single light windows in the side bays.
Below, a 5-light mullioned window flanked by single light
windows.
Left wing is of the same design, with a segmental pointed
doorway to left of the central gable.
Right return, forming entrance front, has a 3-light mullioned
window under a crocketed gable with finials. To left, a
similar window. Central steps to pointed arched doorway with
label mould and enriched spandrels, and above it, a mullioned
overlight. On either side, a 3-light mullioned window. All
these openings have label moulds.
