Memorial monument. c1841. To Robert Ernest, MD. Ashlar. Gothic
Revival style. Octagonal pedestal with 4 blind single lancets
and 4 traceried panels containing inscribed lozenges. Moulded
base and billeted top, with shallow pyramidal cap.
The memorial formerly stood on a plinth near the Church of St
Philip, Infirmary Road, Sheffield. After the destruction of
the church during World War II, the memorial was resited at
the Sheffield Royal Infirmary c1953, and removed to its
present position in 1980. Robert Ernest was the first House
Surgeon at the Sheffield Royal Infirmary, holding the post
from 1798 till 1841.
