Former Freemasons' Hall

Savings bank and Freemasons' hall, now a bank. Freemasons'
Hall 1885, erected at a cost of »1,300; Savings Bank 1887,
erected at a cost of »800. Granite ashlar with plinth,
rusticated pilasters flanking end bays broken forward,
mid-floor string to central bays and moulded cornice to
panelled parapet stepped up to side bays; roof not visible.
Very deep plan. 2 storeys; 1:2:1-bay front, originally nearly
symmetrical but centre right window converted to doorway C20.
Original hornless sashes. Original doorway to right-hand bay
with original cast-iron gates. INTERIOR not inspected.
This is the oldest Freemasons' lodge in the county, occupying
a prominent position in the street.
