Description

FALMOUTH

SW8032NE CHURCH STREET
843-1/7/68 (East side)
22/07/49 Nos.54 AND 55

GV II*

Pair of shops. Early C19. Incised stucco on masonry with
shallow segmental arches; asbestos slate roof; brick end
stacks; cast-iron ogee gutter. Double-depth plan.
3 storeys over basement at rear; symmetrical 3-window front.
Original hornless sashes with glazing bars. Ground floor has a
very fine and rare pair of early C19 bowed and transomed shop
fronts; panelled stall risers, small panes, moulded
entablature with fascia and central pair of doorways with C20
doors. Rear has original 6-panel door with fielded panels,
left of centre, and 16-pane hornless sash to ground-floor
right.
INTERIOR: No.55 has been remodelled C20 to ground floor and
basement, otherwise not inspected.
An extremely fine example of an early C19 shop front, of
outstanding quality in a national context and comparable to
the best examples of contemporary double shop fronts in London
and other fashionable provincial towns.
