Part of inn, now house. Late C15, with later alterations, and
C20 W end porch. Limestone rubble and brick to ground floor,
timber-framed first floor, with brick ridge stack and tiled
roof.
PLAN: 2-room right-angle plan; first-floor rooms open to the
roof of 2 bays to N and one bay separated by closed truss to
S.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3-window range. Doorway in the end gable;
timber-framed jettied first floor over brick ground floor,
with C20 casements, 4 to the ground floor and 3 to the first.
INTERIOR: details include a good roof with wind braces to the
lower 2 registers and collar trusses, open on the extended S
end, with a winder stair at the N end, the ground-floor has
exposed first-floor joists with trimmers for a central stair,
quoins and jambs to ground-floor and blocked W window;
chamfered ceiling beams with quirk and tongue stops.
HISTORICAL NOTE: part of the former late C15 White Lion Inn,
No.8 Gloucester Street (qv), and probably used for dormitory
and service accommodation. As such it probably extended to the
road front.
