House and adjoining workshop, now D. H. Lawrence Birthplace
Museum. c.1875. Brick with slate roof. Dentillated eaves.
Single gable stack. 2 storeys plus garrets, 3 bays. Single
range. Windows are mainly margin light sashes. Street front has
to left, plain gated carriage opening. To right, shop window
with plain surround and hood. To right again, door with
overlight. Above, 3 sashes. South gable has door with segmental
head. Above, sash to garrets. Rear has to left, 2 sashes on
each floor, 3 of them with segmental heads. To right, beyond
carriage opening, a sash and a door. Above to left, a blocked
opening and a sash. Interior has fittings and furnishings
appropriate to the late C19. Kitchen has plain ashlar fireplace
containing working range. Stone sink. Gas lighting. This
building is the birthplace of the author, D. H. Lawrence.
