Description

LEEDS

SE24SW SMITHY LANE, Cookridge
714-1/1/643 (West side (off))
05/08/76 Stable, granary range, cottage and
attached archway east of Moseley
Farmhouse
(Formerly Listed as:
SMITHY LANE, Cookridge
Former cottage at Moseley Farm
immediately east of Farm House)

GV II

Stables or byres with granary/hayloft over, once converted to
cottage with added bay, and archway linking to single-aisled
barn. C17 farm range, S bay converted to cottage with taller
bay added late C19. Coursed gritstone rubble, stone slate and
grey slate roofs. Quoins.
2-storey, 3-bay C17 range has a chamfered doorway at each end
and 2 inserted or enlarged windows between, a sash left and
ventilated stable window right; 3 evenly-spaced single-light
windows to upper storey, with chamfered surrounds to left and
centre, the right window enlarged. On the right return a fine
stone stair to chamfered doorway with owl hole above; to right
of the stone steps a linking wall with chamfered doorway
opening onto the path down to Moseley Farmhouse (qv). Ridge
stack between bays 1 and 2, gable coping right and raised to
added bay roof on left. Rear: a 4-pane sash and small square
part-glazed window above right and a plate-glass sash to added
bay. 4-pane sashes in the S wall of the added bay.
INTERIOR: left end (cottage) only inspected; door opens into
foot of boxed-in stairs, living room/kitchen right with
cast-iron range and set pot surviving; cross-beam with deep
chamfer and joists exposed.
A rare survival of a C17 farm building, the C19 addition to
cottage at the S end is reputed to have taken place when the
bleach works' chimney was demolished (the base remains down
slope to west) and the stone was used for the end bay.
