Liverpool Victoria Insurance

II

Pair of houses, now offices. c.1830-40, altered. Scored stucco
in imitation of channelled ashlar, slate roof. Double-depth
plan with large rear wing. Unorthodox classical style. Three
storeys, 1:3:1 windows, symmetrical, with a high stone plinth
and 1st floor string-course. The end bays are higher than the
centre, and have unusual superimposed orders of engaged
columns or pilasters distyle in antis, with plain friezes:
Tuscan columns at ground floor, Ionic columns at 1st floor,
and panelled pilasters at 2nd floor (which is shorter); the
left bay has a shallow rectangular porch at ground floor with
a C20 door and plain overlight, the right-hand bay has a
window with architrave including pseudo-voussoirs and
keystone, and at 1st and 2nd floors both bays have windows
with hoodmoulds. The centre has similar fenestration at 1st
and 2nd floors (but a shorter window in the centre at 1st
floor), and a low 2nd floor (either added or altered) with 7
small windows. All windows are now casements. Rear and
interior not inspected.
