Farmhouse. Circa late C16 to early C17 and possibly remodelled from earlier house
and extended probably C18 and C19. Rendered and painted cob walls. Dry slate roofs
with gable ends. Brick chimney over external breast with oven projection to left
(west) gable end; axial brick chimney towards right and rear lateral brick chimney.
Main east-west range built into hillside to east. Probably originally 3 room and
through-passage plan, extended with rear wing C18 and outshut in angle to rear
(west) which may be remodelling of earlier wing. Further extended C18 or earlier by
dairy to east and cartshed adjoining. 2-storeys. Irregular 4 window south front.
All C20 and 3-light casements. Ground floor has widened window, left, 6 panel top
glazed door in possible original doorway, widened window, doorway with C20 French
windows within lean-to open porch with side walls acting as buttresses (formerly
window postion) and window between further buttresses to dairy in former door
position. Rear wing has lintels of re-used timber from circa C16 ruined house a
approx. 20 metres to south-west originally with jointed crucks. Cruck post in-situ
to north wall of ruin and heavy chamfered cross beam fallen. Similar beam with
sockets for joists reused to cart shed opening as wallplate lintel. Further reused
fragments within house.
Interior: lower room has fine fireplace with ovolo moulded ashlar jambs and ovolo
moulded oak lintel. Right jamb moved slightly to right when oven inserted. Wide
chamfered and stopped beam in original rear wall position. In adjoining room to
east;, originally the hall, is unaccounted for external projection (now within rear
wing) beside lateral fireplace, probably stair position. Wing has 3 roughly
chamfered cross beams. Fragment of earlier oak roof structure survives in main roof
space over hall.
