The School House

Former headmaster's house, now schoolroom, and caretaker's house. Dated 1854.
By Henry Clutton. Gault brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings; roofs of plain
tiles with decorative bands of pointed tiles. Two storeys. L-shaped plan having
a house in each wing, and each with a central, gabled, rear projection. Chamfered
plinths; openings with 2-centred arches and chamfered, quoined surrounds, the windows
with wood mullions and small-pane casements, the doors board with decorative hinges;
gables have barge boards and pendant finials. East elevation: 3:1-bays, the project-
ing, gabled, right hand bay being end of former headmaster's house (which faces
north) and having 4-light canted bay window with 3-light window over and slit to
gable. 3 left hand bays (caretaker's house): central bay has door with 1-light
window on left and segmental-arched 2-light window over. Outer bays each have a
3-light window, that on left with triangular-headed, hoodmoulded datestone above,
that on right with a 2-light window under gable to 1st floor. 2 broad, corniced,
brick, cross-ridge stacks. Right return (former headmaster's house): 3:1 bays,
the set-back, narrow, right hand bay having a 1-light window and coped parapet;
rest of range as caretaker's house, but the window over door having gable above)
the ground floor left hand window being of only 2 lights, and no 1st floor features
to outer bays. One brick, cross-ridge stack. Left return: windows of 1-light to
ground floor, on right; 2 lights to 1st floor (with inserted window to right); and
slit to gable, which has pendant finial broken off.
