79/25 STREET, Wl
No. 12
G.V. II*
Terraced town house. 1736-37, probably by William Singleton, plasterer
whose decorative work survives in part within, alterations c.1769 and
mid C.19. Stucco faced, slate roof. 4 storeys, basement and dormered
mansard. Broad, slightly asymmetrical 3 window wide front (presumably
with half windows to right originally). Square headed doorway to
right with C.19 panelled door and plain fanlight in original banded
rusticated surround with tripled keystone as are the ground floor
windows, with half window to right. 1st and 2nd floors have
architraved windows, the 1st floor French casements in eared
architraves with triangular pediments flanking and segmental one to
centre; plain attic sashes. Main dentil cornice over 2nd floor, attic
cornice and blocking course. 1st floor stucco balustraded balcony on
console brackets. Wrought iron area railings with urn finials. Of
original interiors the noteworthy features are the 2 very fine
luscious Rococo plaster work ceilings by Singleton in the 2 ground
floor rooms; mid C,19 stone staircase. The 1st floor drawing room
would appear to be of the 1770s, an alteration following the likely
removal (following fire damage received from No. 11?) of the original
front compartment staircase; cornices, doorcases etc.
Survey of London; Vol. XL.
