6/75 Mickerdale Cottage.
4/1/1984 II
Cottage and attached shippon: c1860 perhaps by James Harrison for
Robert Barbour. Rock faced pink sandstone, Welsh slate roof, 1 stone
ridge chimney. H-shaped plan. 1 and 2-storey 3-bay front. Left end
bay projects under gable, with stone coping and kneelers. Chamfered
plinth, 4-light stone-mullioned below. 2-light above under hood
mould. Central bay is a 1-storey arcade of 3 chamfered 4-centred
arched entrances now partly bricked up with iron casements. Right end
bay has coped gable with kneelers above a large cross-shaped loophole,
the circular ends acting as ventilators.
Interior: cottage has 2-room plan. Barn consists of stable with loft
above to front, 2-stall shippon to rear.
An interesting and late dual-purpose cottager's unit treated in a
decorative style.
