Terrace group of town houses. c1700-04, originally part of a close called Queen
Square separated by a wall from the eastern part called Park Street. Brown
brick with red brick window dressings and stone plat bands, slate roofs. 4
storeys (late C18/early C19 added storeys above 2nd floor) and basements. Each
4 windows wide plus half blind windows. Entrances to left; Nos 26-30 have
distinguishing feature of carved wood doorcases, highly intricate all over
foliage enrichment to carved canopy cornice-hoods, brackets and pendant finials
(No 28 a replica); No 32 has added porch with fluted Doric columns. Principally
flush framed glazing bar sashes under red brick gauged flat arches with carved
stone male head keystones on ground and 1st floors. Stone plat bands between
storeys; No 26 has reinstated wood modillion cornice over 2nd floor and eaves
cornice, the rest with parapet copings. Wrought iron area railings with flambe
torch finials. Rear St James's Park elevations also have stone plat bands and
carved mask keystones to flat gauged arches of flush framed glazing bar sashes.
Nos 26 to 30< particularly the latter,retain good interior features with
panelling and cut string staircases with 3 twisted balusters per tread,
cornices., etc. Interior of no 32 altered early C19 and later. Part of -
exceptional group of Queen Anne houses with Nos 15 to 25 (odd) q.v. No 28 was
the residence of Lord Haldane (GLC plaque).
