Pair of terraced town houses. c1700-1704, with late C18/early c19 alterations,
built as part of the original Queen Square development. Brown brick with red
brick window dressings up to 2nd floor, slate roofs. 4 storeys, the top floor
added and dormered mansard to No 21, on basements. Each 5 windows wide, plus 2
blind half windows. Central doorways approached by steps; No 21 has later
stucco door surround with consoles and cornice; No 23 retains original carved
wood doorcase with panelled pilasters and remarkable canopy cornice-hood with
pendant finials, carved overall with foliage enrichment. Flush framed glazing.
bar sashes under flat gauged red brick arches up to 2nd floor, recessed sashes
to top floor; carved mask keystones on ground and 1st floors. Stone plat bands
over ground and lst floors; parapet with coping. Wrought iron area railings
with flambé torch finials. Interior largely intact to No 23, late Cl8/early
C19 alterations to No 21 but elements of panelling remain and both retain cut and
carved string staircases with twisted balusters, etc. Part of exceptional
group of Queen Anne houses.
