2/14 Eastern entrance to the
Saltersford Tunnel

Canal tunnel entrance arch: 1777 by James Brindley for the Trent and
Mersey Canal Co. and restored and re-opened in 1984. English bond
blue brick with red sandstone dressings. Curving facade has a
parabolic stone arch at its centre, a plain band at ground level and
an original worn plaque above, with the tunnel name in seriffed
script. Plain parapet with rounded coping. The bridge ends in stone
pilasters and has a revetment wall on each side angling down. On the
right side of the arch is a steel plaque recording the reopening of
the tunnel, by Sir Frank Price in 1984.
