C18 Georgian style. When the north aisle (and transept) were pulled down in 1774, the arcades were blocked in, recycling the rubble, and round arched windows inserted. These have a fashionable Gibbs surround, so called after James Gibbs, architect, (1682-1754).
The style, consisting of alternating large and small stone blocks, was also used by other architects such as Palladio and Colen Campbell. The glazing bar pattern is shown by modern iron rods. (Photo Sept 2007).
