NORMAN style. The North arcade is thought to date from c1130. Norman columns with round piers and wide, scalloped capitals. But Norman, Romanesque, arches were semicircular. These here are steeply pointed, a transition to the Early English Gothic style. The pier to the right, octagonal with a bell capital, is purely E E Gothic. The wider span of this arch suggests increasing confidence in the new style by the masons. This same pier has holes from iron staples which were used to hold in place the squires pew: a wooden room without a top, for the exclusive use of the lord of the manors family. These were popular in the C18, when the north aisle was pulled down and the arcade filled in. To the right of the sill of the C15, Pependicular Gothic, clerestory window is a corbel, which served to support the earlier roof. (Photo Sept 2007).
