Two houses, part of terrace. c1770-1800. Flemish-bond brick,
header-bond to the curved corner bay, stone coping to the
parapet, cornice, stepped voussoirs, cills and door cases,
double Roman tile mansard roofs hipped to the corner of No.9,
which is lead with rolled joints, and brick stacks to party
walls. Double-depth plans. 3 storeys with attics and
basements; No.8 to right is 2-window range, No.9 is 5-window
range. Both houses stepped slightly back from No.7 (qv) to
right; 6/6-pane sash windows to second floor and 6/9 panes to
first floor; the stepped voussoirs have been chiselled flat.
No.8 has 6-panel door with a semicircular overlight and
pilasters supporting an open pediment; plate glass to
ground-floor window. No.9 has double 3-panel doors in similar
doorcase below one window to both upper floors facing King
Square. The 3-window range left return in Queen Street also
has levelled-off stepped voussoirs, late C19 leaded coloured
glass to 2 ground-floor windows to right and cambered brick
arch to basement to left and blocked C20 opening to right. The
curved corner bay has wedge lintels to curved window frames
and a blind door below. INTERIORS not inspected. These houses
are part of a fine late Georgian square built on the site of
Bridgwater Castle.
