Bank, now building society. c1900. Ashlar; parapeted roof.
Edwardian Baroque style. Single-storey; 7-bay curved facade. 6
bays form symmetrical composition, with 2-storey bay to right.
Channelled rustication, top entablature and balustraded
parapet. Entrance to left end has flanking rusticated
pilasters, ashlar doorcase with angle pilasters, architrave,
frieze and consoled cornice, paired 3-panel doors; 2
small-paned lights over, with pilasters, cornice and shell and
foliage cresting; modillioned cornice to top entablature and
clock face in cupola above. Corresponding entrance to right is
simpler: architrave, pulvinated frieze and pediment, lights
have no cresting, cupola has round window. Central bays
articulated by paired Tuscan three-quarter columns on plinth,
round-headed windows with console-keystones. End bay has
flanking rusticated pilasters and small-paned casements.
Interior: altered. The building is a good example of the style
and is a salient feature of both George Street and Market
Street, grouping with the Town Hall, (q.v.). Included for
group value.
