Causeway walls. Late C11 with later alterations and early C19
addition. Stone rubble with some dressed squared stone. Walls
have herringbone masonry, especially that to south side, with
C19 embattled parapet; extension to Upper Lodge (q.v.) is C19
with embattled parapet. Walls extend approximately 28m to east
of castle entrance, with further 17m to north side adjoining
Upper Lodge. An important survival from the 1st stone castle
on the site.
